At Dominion Energy, we are committed to continually reviewing and analyzing our energy infrastructure to provide safe, reliable, and affordable electricity to the communities we serve. Accelerated economic and residential growth in Loudoun County, Virginia has resulted in increased electrical demand, particularly associated with Loudoun County’s role as one of the world’s leading innovation and technology hubs. To keep up with this demand and maintain reliable service, we are replacing wires, a process known as reconductoring, on existing transmission lines in Loudoun County.
We are replacing wires on approximately eight miles of an existing transmission line between our Belmont and Beaumeade substations. About five miles of the project occurs along the W&OD Trail, approximately between mile markers 25 and 31. Work will be similar to our Beaumeade Substation to Pleasant View Substation Reconductor Project completed in 2022. Since the two transmission lines share the same structures, our crews can only work on one line at a time. Therefore, we will return to work on the other circuit along the W&OD Trail between Smith Switch Road and Cochran Mill Road. This project will be completed in three phases between August 2022 and June 2023. Phases 1 and 2 will impact the W&OD Trail, including temporary Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT)-approved detours for trail users.
We are replacing wires on existing transmission lines between our Beaumeade and Buttermilk substations and between our Beaumeade and Paragon Park substations in Loudoun County, Virginia. These updates will allow us to enhance electric service reliability for our customers. As part of this project, we will replace three double-circuit monopoles and one single-circuit monopole with four double-circuit galvanized steel monopoles. Three of the four structures are along the W&OD Trail between Pacific Boulevard and Smith Switch Road, approximately between mile markers 24 and 26. This project will be completed in two phases between January and May 2023. Phase 2 will impact the W&OD Trail, including temporary VDOT-approved detours for trail users.
Both paved and gravel paths will be closed and patrolled by law enforcement.
The W&OD Trail will be closed from Rolling Water Terrace (west of Ashburn Road) and Tuscarora Creek Park (at Battlefield Parkway and Solitude Court) for up to ten days in April 2023 (currently planned for Apr. 3-7, subject to change). Both paved and gravel paths will be closed and patrolled by law enforcement.
An 8.5-mile detour (pending VDOT approval) will direct trail users from near Ashburn Road to Gloucester Parkway, Belmont Ridge Road, Riverside Parkway, River Creek Parkway to Battlefield Parkway.
More experienced cyclists, at their own risk, may choose to travel Gloucester Parkway to the Belmont Ridge Road connection.
Students who use the W&OD Trail to access Newton-Lee Elementary, Trailside Middle, and Stone Bridge High Schools will be permitted to cross at the Trailside Park access path during limited hours before and after school.
Both paved and gravel paths will be closed and patrolled by law enforcement.
